Will the units take it?
Stone is heavy and rigid, so it needs a solid base. We check that the run is level from one end to the other, that every carcass is screwed to the wall and to the next, and that none has suffered from leaks, especially the sink base. Kitchens from the last couple of decades are usually fine. If something needs packing, a new leg or a fix, you will know before we price the stone.
Step by step
- Send a rough sketch or photos and tell us the stone you like; we price it.
- We measure the room. Depending on the kitchen, that happens with the old tops on or once they are removed.
- The slab is cut to those measurements with every hole in place.
- Installation day: out with the old, in with the stone, seams finished, edges checked.
- Sink, tap and hob are hooked back up by the relevant trades.

Decide on the sink first
Swapping worktops is the ideal time for a new sink, because the opening is cut before the stone arrives. Undermount sinks look tidy on stone and let you brush crumbs straight in. Pick the sink, tap and hob before we measure. A Gas Safe registered engineer must reconnect any gas hob.
The tiles behind
Pulling off laminate can crack the lowest row of tiles. A low stone upstand covers the line and often saves redoing the wall. Behind the cooker, a taller stone or porcelain panel wipes clean far faster than grout. See splashbacks and upstands.
