Guide
From quote to finished kitchen: how stone worktops are fitted
Stone cannot be trimmed on site to make it fit, so the whole job hinges on one accurate set of measurements taken in your kitchen. Here is how a Loughborough job progresses, and what you can do at each stage to keep it moving.
Stage one: the price
Send rough sizes, the stone you have in mind, and a note of any sink, hob or tap holes, upstands or splashbacks. Photos or a designer’s drawing make it quicker. A good quote itemises everything, which makes comparing firms straightforward.
Stage two: getting ready for us
We measure once the cabinets are installed, level and fixed, end panels on, and under-counter appliances in place. Decide on sink, tap and hob beforehand, ideally down to the exact model, since their holes are measured to the millimetre.
Stage three: the measuring visit
We capture every wall, corner, opening and overhang exactly as built. Walls are seldom perfectly straight, and this is how the finished stone sits tight against them. Seam positions are agreed with you here.
Stage four: cutting
In the workshop, saws running with water shape the slab to our measurements. Cut-outs, tap holes, drainer grooves and edges are all completed before it travels.
Stage five: installation
Each piece is carried in, levelled and bonded, and seams are closed with resin tinted to match. Upstands and splashbacks follow, and natural stone is sealed. After that, the sink, tap and hob can be connected, a gas hob only by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What tends to hold things up
- Cabinets loose or out of level on measuring day.
- Appliances or sink still undecided.
- Layout changes once measuring is done.
- An obstructed route for carrying long pieces.
Common questions
Can you work from my measurements?
They are fine for a price. Cutting is always done from measurements we take ourselves.
Do the old tops need to come off first?
Not necessarily. On replacement jobs we can often measure with them still in place.
