Stone worktop prices: what changes the cost
Ask three firms to price the same Loughborough kitchen and you may get three very different figures. Usually that reflects what each has included rather than who is cheaper. This guide lists the factors that drive cost and a checklist for reading quotes side by side.
Material and design
Within every stone there is a wide spread. A plain quartz usually sits below a dramatic veined one, a common granite below an exotic colour, and some porcelains and marbles are firmly at the luxury end. Two designs that look alike may sit in quite different price bands.
Area and number of slabs
The more stone, and the more slabs it takes, the higher the cost. An L-shaped layout plus island might need two or three slabs. A thicker slab also uses more material.
Cut-outs and edge work
Every hole for a sink, hob or tap is labour. An undermount sink involves polishing the exposed edge, so it costs more than an inset one. Drainer grooves, curves, mitres and shaped profiles add a little each.
Upstands and other extras
Upstands, splashbacks, full-height panels and sills are extra stone, often from the same slab. Mention them up front so the figure is complete.
Access and other trades
Stairs and tight hallways need more hands and more time. Disposing of old worktops, plumbing, gas, electrics and tiling are separate items. Check which a quote covers.
A checklist for comparing quotes
- Is it the same stone, thickness and edge in each?
- Are measuring, cutting, installation and sealing all in?
- Is every hole, upstand and splashback itemised?
- Is removing the old worktops included?
Common questions
Can I get a figure without a visit?
Yes. Send rough dimensions, a drawing and the stone you want. The measuring visit confirms the final figure.
Is a new kitchen needed for stone?
No. Sound cabinets can carry stone, at far less cost than replacing them.
