Castle and spa town
Ashby Castle dates from the 12th century. The Hastings family took over the town and castle in 1464, William Hastings strengthened it from 1473, and it held out as a Royalist garrison until a long siege ended in March 1646. In the 1820s Ashby became a spa: the Ivanhoe Baths opened in 1822, with a Doric front 200 feet long, and Rawdon Terrace on Bath Street was built for visitors. The baths were demolished in 1962.
