Kitchen island tops in Loughborough
An island top tends to be the largest piece of stone in a Loughborough kitchen and the one that catches the eye. Together we settle the details, such as how far it overhangs for seating and whether the stone turns down the ends, and once the island frame is built we measure it and cut the top from a slab picked for it.
- Seating overhangs
- Waterfall sides
- Sink or hob in the island
Slab size and the route in
Slabs have a maximum size, and a generous island can exceed it. In that case we agree a seam with you in advance, usually through an opening or wherever it will be least noticed. We also walk the route the piece must travel: front door, hallway, any awkward turns.
Overhangs for stools
Allow somewhere near 250 to 300 mm of overhang so knees fit under comfortably. A modest overhang needs no help; anything deeper calls for concealed steel or legs, the exact need set by stone type and thickness. We specify exactly what yours needs at the measuring visit.
Turning the stone down the ends
A waterfall end carries the top down to the floor at each end of the island, normally joined at a mitre so the pattern seems to wrap round. Veined designs make the most of it, and it shields the island’s sides from feet and trolleys. The veins have to be planned carefully across the pieces.
A working island
Move the hob or sink to the island and it becomes the busiest spot in the room. Supply, waste and power must be in place before the top goes on, and an island hob generally needs a pop-up or ceiling-mounted extractor. Settle appliances early so openings are placed correctly.
Common questions
Can it be a single piece?
If it fits on one slab and through your doors, yes. If not, we agree a neat seam.
Different stone from the rest of the kitchen?
Often done: a marble or bold porcelain island, quieter quartz on the walls.
Best thickness for an island?
30 mm feels generous; a thinner slab with a mitred front gives the same depth with less weight.
