Questions and answers

Quick answers on prices, stones, installation and care. The guides go deeper, or ring 01509 453341.

Pricing

Is there a charge for a price?

No. We price your job free of charge and without obligation.

What should I send for a price?

Approximate lengths and depths of the worktop runs, or a sketch, plus the stone you like and your postcode. Photos and any designer’s drawing are a bonus.

Why do quotes vary so much between firms?

Mostly because of what each includes: templating, openings, edges, upstands, removal of old tops, installation. Our guide to what changes the cost has a checklist.

Do you have a price list?

No, because the stone, size, openings and access differ every time. Phone 01509 453341 or fill in the form for a figure for your kitchen.

Choosing your stone

What is the toughest worktop?

Top of the list for toughness: granite, genuine quartzite and porcelain. Quartz is nearly as tough and the easiest to keep. Marble is the softest and shows wear.

Which ones never need sealing?

Quartz and porcelain. Natural stones such as granite, marble and quartzite get a sealer on day one and occasional top-ups.

Can I put hot pans down?

On granite and porcelain, briefly, yes. Quartz’s resin can scorch, so put a trivet down; it is a sensible habit with any stone.

Will quartz fade by a sunny window?

Certain designs can yellow if they sit in bright sun for years. For conservatories and outdoor kitchens we suggest porcelain.

What is the difference between quartz and quartzite?

Quartz is manufactured; quartzite is natural rock. See quartzite explained.

Is quartz safe to live with?

Yes. Silica dust is a risk when the stone is cut, not once it is installed. See is quartz safe?

Templating and installation

When do you come to template?

Once the cabinets are installed, level and fixed, and the sink, tap and hob have been chosen.

Can stone go on my existing cabinets?

In most kitchens, yes, if they are sturdy, level and fixed to the wall. Each cabinet is checked at the measuring visit. See replacement worktops.

Will you take away the old worktops?

We can include removal and disposal in the price if you want it.

Who reconnects the sink and hob?

They are reconnected once the stone is in. Gas hobs must be reconnected by someone on the Gas Safe register. Your quote states who does each part.

Will there be joins?

Only where a run or island exceeds the slab, or where splitting a piece helps get it indoors. You agree the positions before we cut.

How thick are stone worktops?

Quartz, granite and marble usually come at 20 or 30 mm; porcelain is often 12 mm. A mitred front gives thin slabs a chunkier look.

Looking after it

How do I clean a stone worktop?

A cloth with warm, lightly soapy water, or a stone spray with neutral pH, then dry it off.

What should I never use?

Scourers and abrasive creams on any polished stone; bleach on quartz; vinegar, citrus or acid descalers on marble or quartzite.

How do I stop limescale?

Wipe the area round the tap dry after washing up. The cleaning guide covers each stone.
