A town built on coal
Coalville grew up around its pits. William Stenson sank the Long Lane colliery at Whitwick in 1824, and George Stephenson sank Snibston Colliery in 1831. Snibston closed in December 1983. The centre still has streets of terraced houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with larger detached homes along London Road and Forest Road.
