Home of one of Europe’s largest granite quarries
Mountsorrel’s quarry covers about 785,000 square metres and produces around 3 million tonnes of stone a year, making it one of the largest granite quarries in Europe. The rock is a hornblende granite, used mainly for construction and roads. Organised quarrying began in the late 18th century, and by 1870 it employed about 500 people. The 1793 Buttercross in the village centre is Grade II* listed.
A village that has grown fast
Mountsorrel’s population rose from 8,223 in 2011 to 12,885 in 2021, an increase of more than half in ten years. Many of those homes are new builds with standard laminate worktops. Once you have settled in, stone can go straight onto the existing cabinets. See replacement worktops.
Conservation area with extra controls
The older part of Mountsorrel is a conservation area, and part of it is covered by an Article 4 direction, one of only two in Charnwood, so certain external changes there need planning permission. It has no bearing on a worktop swap inside an unlisted home.
